Traveling with teens to NYC is a whole vibe. There's energy, attitude, opinions - and let's be real - a lot of snacks involved. We just wrapped a whirlwind birthday trip to the Big Apple, and here are a few things that helped us make it fun and memorable. (without anyone rage-quitting in Times Square).
1. Start with something meaningful
We kicked off at the 9/11 Memorial. Even with all the NYC buzz, this was a moment of calm, connection, and reflection—yes, even for teens in hoodies. Let them ask questions. Let them feel it.
2. Mix the iconic with the unexpected
They have to see the Statue of Liberty, right? But we paired that with a walk through DUMBO and a video game run in Brooklyn. Because balance.
3. Find their niche
We found a tiny retro video game store that felt like stepping into a teen boy’s dream. Instant win. Pro tip: search Reddit for “hidden gems + your kid’s interest.”
4. Give them photo ops
They may act too cool, but they want the pics. (Proof: we got several solid Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge shots without bribery.)
5. Sweeten the deal
Serendipity is a sugar bomb in the best way. Frozen hot chocolate = instant mood booster.
6. Plan for downtime
NYC is loud, busy, and full-on. Teens need pauses. Whether it’s people-watching in Central Park or zoning out with a snack—build in buffer time.
7. Don’t skip the skyline
We ended one night at Summit One Vanderbilt. Neon lights, city views, and a mirrored floor had even the most “meh” teen saying “whoa.”
8. Shoes. Matter.
Bring extra. Break them in. Or be like us—NYC shopping trip mid-trip because someone’s shoes didn’t make it.
Bonus Tip:
Let them lead the day for a bit. Whether it’s picking lunch or navigating the subway—giving teens a bit of ownership keeps them engaged (and off their phones… for like 10 minutes, but we’ll take it).

And if you’re dreaming of a family getaway that feels this magical we’ll… that’s kinda my thing.
